Ipe Decking Profiles
A profile is the overall shape of a board when viewed from the end. It affects both the installation method and final appearance. Any profile can be combined with any edge bevel.
Profile | Description |
---|---|
Standard (S4S) |
A basic rectangular board. It is fastened by driving screws through the face. Wood plugs are often used to hide the screw heads. |
Pre-Grooved |
Grooved along one or both edges for use with hidden fastener systems. No screws show in the finished project. |
Tongue & Groove (T&G) |
A tongue on one edge and a groove on the other. The tongue of one board fits into the groove of the one next to it. Fasteners (nails or screws) are inserted through the tongues, so they are hidden in the finished project. |
Shiplap |
An overhang on one edge of the board that overlaps a recessed area on the board next to it. One fastener is driven through underneath this overlap, so it is hidden from view, but another fastener must be inserted above the overlap through the visible face of the board. The visible screw heads are often hidden with wood plugs. |
Rainscreen |
A combination of pre-grooved and shiplap. An overhang on one edge of the board overlaps a recessed area on the board next to it. Edges are grooved for use with hidden fasteners, so no screws show in the finished project. |
End-Matched | Boards are milled along all four edges instead of just the two long edges. This has a distinctive aesthetic effect, but also a practical one: end joints don’t have to land on a framing member (joist or furring strip), which results in fewer cuts, less wasted material, and a faster install. |
Deck Tile |
Prefabricated, modular tiles that don’t require framing. |
An edge bevel is a contour milled onto the edge of the board. It only affects the final appearance of the project, not the installation method. Any edge bevel can be combined with any profile.
Edge Bevel | Description |
---|---|
Square Edge | Boards fit together snugly with no bevel, creating a smooth surface. |
Nickel Gap | Boards edges have a rectangular bevel, which creates a narrow space at the joint, resulting in an aesthetic shadow line. |
V-Groove | Boards edges have an angled bevel, which creates a V-shaped channel at the joint. |
Random odd-length orders include odd length boards which are 5′–15′ long.
Standard random length orders include even & odd length boards which are 6′–18′ long.
Boards cut to specific lengths over 7′ will incur an additional upcharge:
- $0.10 per lineal foot for 8′–14′ lengths
- $0.80 per lineal foot for 15′–18′ lengths
- $1.00 per lineal foot for 19′–20′ lengths

Beware of Shady Sellers
Some unscrupulous lumber companies charge a premium, ship low-grade material, and source their wood from unethical mills. Here are some questions to ask when buying your lumber:
- Where is the material shipping from?
- Has the seller actually seen the wood they're selling?
- Can you visit their warehouse?
Our lumber is sustainably sourced directly from well managed forest and custom milled with our own machinery. We have a huge inventory that you’re welcome to visit any time, and we work with the wood ourselves, so we can guarantee its quality. We don’t charge extra insurance or packaging fees—we cover those for you!
In short, if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Learn more about how to avoid bad lumber companies.
