DESCRIPTION	Red elm's sapwood is greyish white to light brown. The narrow heartwood is reddish brown to dark brown in color. The grain can be straight, but is often interlocked. This lumber has a coarse texture.
BOTANICAL NAME	Ulmus fulva
OTHER NAMES	Slippery elm, brown elm
WORKING PROPERTIES	Red Elm is fairly easy to work with. The lumber nails, screws and glues well. This wood can be sanded, stained and polished to a fine finish. It dries well with minimum degrade and little movement.
DURABILITY	Rated as non-resistant to heartwood decay, and classed as permeable to preservatives.
USES	Furniture, cabinet making, flooring, internal joinery, paneling and coffins.
COMMENTS	This wood is difficult to split because of its interlocked grain.
